BM Schools Academic Quiz · For students
Your curiosity.
Your Challenge.
A national academic Challenge you take individually, at your own school. Bring what you know, think carefully and discover something new.
What will I actually do?
Read. Think. Choose your answer.
Five sections, multiple-choice questions and one mark per correct answer. Primary has 50 questions; Junior, Intermediate and Senior have 100.
Your school chooses an online or supported paper sitting. You work on your own, with a teacher there to explain the procedure.
A broad academic challenge
Curiosity does not stay in one subject.
The Challenge draws on the wider world. These are areas to explore, not a promise about particular questions.
Section A
Our World & Lifestyle
Section B
Science & Nature
Section C
History & Politics
Section D
Culture
Section E
General Knowledge
Enjoy finding connections: a place and its history, a scientific idea and the world around you, a book and the culture that shaped it.
Where do I fit?
A starting point for your school year.
Your teacher confirms your entry. Use your jurisdiction and school year or class to explore the usual level.
On the day
Know what happens next.
- 01
Settle in
Your teacher explains the sitting and gives you the papers or online access details.
- 02
Start together
Follow the instructions. Ask about procedure before you begin if something is unclear.
- 03
Think for yourself
Read carefully, choose your answers and keep your work independent.
- 04
Complete the sitting
Follow the submission steps online, or hand in the paper answer sheet as instructed.
A technical problem or interruption? Tell the supervising teacher. They can follow the authorised process.
Inside the student Challenge
A clear space to think.
Pupils see their questions, saved answers and time remaining together. The paper overview helps them return to questions before they finish.

Before you take part
Prepare with an open mind.
Practice can make the question style feel familiar. You do not need to turn curiosity into a narrow revision list.
Try available practice

- Explore the style. Look at the practice and past-paper options available for your Challenge.
- Read broadly. Follow subjects that interest you and notice connections between them.
- Know the procedure. Ask your teacher about the format, timing and permitted materials.
- Plan any support. Tell your teacher early about access requirements so arrangements can be checked.
Your result
Personal achievement.
Shared through your school.
Your teacher can give you your individual result after it is released. You will not need to find your name on a public results list.
Awards and recognitionMore than the day itself
Your released result gives you something to reflect on: what you knew, what interested you and what you might explore next.
Certificates and awards, where applicable, recognise achievement under the current Challenge rules.
You do not need a Student Account to take part or receive a result from your teacher.
An optional personal record
Your Student Account.
A Student Account can show your own linked Challenges and released results or documents where available. It is separate from the access your teacher gives you for a live sitting.

Your Challenge result
Alex Morgan · Senior Challenge
Optional
Your school can provide your result without an account.
Personal
See your own released records, not a public list of other pupils.
School-supported
Ask your teacher about the account route available to you.
Questions from students
Am I in a team?
No. You take part as an individual and choose your own answers. Other pupils from your school may take part at the same sitting.
Do I need to travel?
You normally take the Challenge at your own school. There is no normal requirement to travel to London or another central venue.
What if I do not know an answer?
Read the question and choices carefully, then make your own decision. Your teacher can explain the procedure but cannot answer the question for you.
Can I see my result without an account?
Yes. Your teacher can provide your result once it has been released. A Student Account is optional.
From interest to taking part
Help your school take part.
If your school is not already taking part, tell a teacher or Head Teacher / Principal that you are interested. BMSAQ is an individual Challenge, normally taken at school with teacher supervision.
Download the letter and give it to a teacher, form tutor, Head of Year or the school office. Ask them to visit www.bmsaq.com or the Organiser Portal. You do not need an account to read or download it.
What happens next?
- You tell your school. Share your interest and the letter.
- A member of staff registers the school. School registration is free.
- The school orders pupil entries. Your teacher confirms the appropriate Challenge.
- Your teacher organises the Challenge. The school prepares the sitting and completes readiness.
- You take part at school. Bring your curiosity and choose your own answers.
If your school already uses BMSAQ, ask the existing School Organiser about taking part. There is no need to register the school again.
